Roland Guerin

who is Roland Guerin?

Born in Fort Polk, Louisiana, Roland Guerin began playing bass at age 11, learning from his blues and zydeco bass-playing mother. While studying marketing at Southern University, Guerin joined jazz educator Alvin Batiste's Band, The Jazztronauts.

The New Orleans bassist/singer/songwriter/producer has toured and performed with legendary musicians, including George Benson, Jimmy Scott, Frank Morgan, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, John Scofield, Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Brian Blade, and Paul Gilbert. Guerin has been featured on the Blind Boys of Alabama's Grammy Award-winning album Down in New Orleans, Marcus Roberts's Grammy Award-nominated recording of George Gershwin's classic Rhapsody in Blue, and Allen Toussaint's album Connected. Guerin's first album, The Wind of the New Land, was called "a literal piece of art" by JazzReview. His 2019 album Grass Roots was reviewed as "full of approachable but sophisticated compositions that echo many of his interests, spanning R&B, rock, jazz, blues, funk, folk, and more," in NOLA/BestOfNewOrleans.

As a member of the Marcus Roberts Trio, Guerin performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, and Seiji Ozawa's New Japan Philharmonic. Guerin joined the Allen Toussaint Band in 2008, touring with him until Toussaint passed in 2015. He then joined the band of Dr. John, becoming The Night Tripper's final Musical Director. Guerin has since toured with guitar legend Paul Gilbert, as well as with Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band.

In 2021, Guerin won Burl Audio's International Song of the Year Contest with "28 Days," which awarded him a Burl Mothership for his state-of-the-art home studio in New Orleans. Guerin resumed touring with the Marcus Roberts Trio in 2022, performing Gershwin at The Grange in Hampshire, UK, on the BBC, and in 2023 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans.

Guerin toured in 2024 with stops in Finland and NAMM, spreading his genre, Prog:Funk, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's live-streamed showcase. He performed a showcase at The New Marigny Theatre in New Orleans during Jazz Fest Season and performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band featuring Daniel Lanois.

Guerin's Prog:Funk merges bass-driven progressive music styles with melodies, rhythms, and storytelling techniques born from the legends Guerin performed with for decades. He debuted Prog:Funk at NOLAxNOLA Fest, and his EP Prog:Funk was released on That-AWay Productions / Louisiana Red Hot Records in 2024, making Tidal's 50 Most Out There Jazz releases, and Apple Music's curated New in Rock.

NOLA / Gambit's music critic wrote: "The bass riff-heavy 'I Propose' touches on those months' competition for digital attention, while wishing people would be more drawn to cooperation and community. "Crunch Time" is a patient, dreamy track about growing older and realizing the preciousness of time and the moments shared with others. On the EP's catchy closer, "Bridge to Open Waters" — which gives a hint to the upcoming 2025 full-length — Guerin urges listeners to open their minds to changes that push society forward."
